Eggo Waffle Package Redesign

The purpose of this project was to take a preexisting product that has strong design and packaging problems, and redesign it to be more successful and appealing. The conditions are that the existing logo of the brand or product cannot be redesigned.

I chose Kellogg’s Eggo Homestyle waffles as my product for this package redesign product. I chose it because I know the packaging and design very well, and had preexisting opinions about how the product should be redesigned and repackaged to be more appealing to a wide market and more functional.
I ultimately chose the round container option for my packaging over a hexagonal or “updated” rectangular box because the cylindrical container fit all my requirements for function of the box while also minimizing waste of materials. It also allowed for 100% of the box to stay recyclable, because the cylinder is entirely made of cardboard except two thin, round pieces of plastic that go around the top and lid of the container, which can also be recycled.
I wanted the redesign to still be recognizeable as Eggo waffles, so I maintained the bold red. I decided to get rid of the photograph of a stack of waffles on the box which is way overdone and seen on every waffle box. We know what they look like we don't need the box to show us. For the other colors in my new color scheme, I softened the yellow and added a bright blue to make the box more appealing to adults looking for a healthy breakfast option which seems to be Eggo's new target market as they are coming out with more and more healthy flavor options. I used a simple ribbon banner to create a safety seal for the lid, which will also appeal to this older audience. The design was meant to create a much better hierachy of information while keeping the design relatively simple.
The heating instructions now occur inside the lid of the box, so that insead of carrying the whole can over to look at when you're cooking the waffles, you just need to take the lid with you to read the directions if you need them. This also allowed for more space on the outside of the package so that the information didn't get too crowded.
The final redesign versus the original packaging.
